The recruitment of able and committed barristers is fundamental to the continued success of College Chambers. We welcome applications from those with experience at the bar whether employed or self-employed; however, the majority of our recruitment is from those who have successfully completed twelve months pupillage with College Chambers.

The qualities we look for from a candidate are:

  • Academic achievement,
  • Integrity,
  • Empathy, and the ability to communicate with clients
who have a vast range needs and experiences,
  • An aptitude for advocacy.

  • Pupillage
    clerks@college-chambers.co.uk

Chambers takes a long-term view towards pupillage so as to guarantee our quality of service and enhance our reputation through the careful selection of future tenants. Our recruitment process reflects the high standards necessary to become a member of Chambers. We have a three-stage assessment process - written application, initial interview and finally a day-long assessment in Chambers.

Our pupils can expect a comprehensive range of work, excellent and intensive training, and a good level of funding. Each pupil is given a dedicated pupil supervisor who will provide the correct balance between tutoring and assessment.

During the second six months of pupillage, our pupils will have the opportunity to take on work in their own right, supported by the breadth and depth of knowledge from College Chambers and providing a solid foundation for development of practice beyond pupillage and into tenancy.

Applications for pupillage commencing 2012 are now closed. Any future vacancies will be advertised on pupillage portal, and on our website. Please check for details.

  • Mini Pupillage
    clerks@college-chambers.co.uk

Mini-pupillage is a good way to spend time with barristers and watch them at work. It can help potential barristers to decide whether a career at the bar is for them and whether to apply for pupillage at a particular chambers.

College Chambers offers week-long mini-pupillages to suitable applicants who have embarked upon or completed their undergraduate studies. Mini-pupillage here is not assessed and is not a pre-requisite for a pupillage application.

Mini-pupils here can expect to see family and criminal work and perhaps other areas of law, and meet many Members of Chambers.

If you are interested, please apply with a covering letter and CV (which should include examination results for A-levels and beyond) to Sarah Henstock-Turner at College Chambers, 19 Carlton Crescent, Southampton, SO15 2ET or by email to minipupillage@college-chambers.co.uk.

  • Tenancy
College Chambers tends to recruit from its current pupils but also welcomes tenancy applications from established practitioners.

Please apply to the Head of Chambers, Robin Belben, at College Chambers, 19 Carlton Crescent, Southampton, SO15 2ET.

All applications are treated in strictest confidence and in accordance with the Equality and Diversity Code for the Bar.

  • Equal Opportunities
College Chambers is fully committed to the Equality and Diversity Code for the Bar
    www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/standardsandguidance/eanddcode

We are committed to recruiting pupils, tenants and staff entirely on merit irrespective of race, ethnic or national origin, nationality, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, religion, political persuasion or disability (so far as the physical constraints of our premises permit). As regards disability, we will make reasonable adjustments for disabled applicants for pupillage and tenancy as regards the application process and will consider making reasonable adjustments to facilitate pupillage and/or practice as a tenant in the event of a successful application.
